Farming and Birds for Cornwall

22nd June 2006, Duchy College, Stoke Climsland

Farming and Birds for Cornwall was an opportunity for the 66 advisers registered for the event to find out how Environmental Stewardship schemes can best benefit farmland birds in Cornwall. Advice on how to achieve “The Big Three” for farmland birds (see mug below) in relation to Environmental Stewardship schemes was delivered by specialists from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Defra/RDS SW, the Game Conservancy Trust and English Nature (Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Team). After talks in the morning and fuelled by an excellent lunch of local produce, much of the afternoon was spent in the field at Duchy Home Farm mapping management options for birds – translating the theory heard in the morning into practical proposals.

The Big Three - a handy reminder

the handy reminder included in the take-home material

The Big Three for farmland birds are nest sites, insect food and seed food - in spring, summer and winter respectively.

These can be achieved through many of the options available under Environmental Stewardship.
