With photos on web pages there always has to be a trade-off between quality and download time. The images on these pages are all progressive jpeg format at various degrees of compression. None is larger than about 50K and mostly there are no more than 10 to a page so that, with luck and a reasonably fast modem, the entire page should download in about a minute. Be patient! Of course, with ISDN or ASDL you will be laughing! Experiment suggests that contrary to received wisdom, jpeg compression far less than 75% can still produce intrusively obvious 'blocking' especially in large not-quite-monochrome areas. Increasingly therefore our standard practice will be to post images of modest pixel dimensions but only lightly compressed.
