Last one at the Farm…
November 2006 –
just got around to uploading some samples of a recent gig at the Farmhouse –
see the sounds
page. John
Bradshaw has now retired and the Farmhouse has closed for refurbishment, so
that was my last gig in the old place! It really is the end of an era. I don’t
know what sort of pub it will be when it reopens under new management, indeed
if it will still be a live music pub, so watch this space…
Back again!
July 2006 - phew,
what a gap since the last bit of news! I’ve been here all the time, just
haven’t got around to updating the site! Well, The Orange Show is no more, at
least with the line up I was in, though I’m sure Eldred will keep it going in
some form! We had some great gigs and a lot of fun, check out the sounds page for some samples. Best of luck to
both Eldred and Jon with their future musical ventures. For me it’s back to
jazz for most gigs at the moment. I’ve finally got around to setting up my home
studio involving a properly miked drum kit, so check out the sounds page for new recordings, which will
appear whenever I have time to record! My listening advice for drummers at the
moment is Mark Guiliana – this guy is amazing. Check him out on the great
Avishai Cohen’s albums (www.avishaimusic.com)
plus his own band Heernt (www.markguiliana.com),
where Bill Bruford gives it a great review – praise indeed! Also check out
David King of The Bad Plus (www.thebadplus.com),
another great drummer with a unique band who played a great gig in Bath
recently, I particularly recommend the album ‘Give’.
The Orange Show...
September 2003 - I've just joined a new band! The Orange Show play improvised music live and draw influences from rock, jazz, funk, and pretty much everything else to create a very individual sound, reminiscent of early King Crimson and Pink Floyd but with a jazzier edge. I'm hugely enjoying playing with this band - we did our first gig on Thursday 25th in The Porter cellar bar in Bath to a very appreciative audience. Come and check the band out! Gig details and other info are available at www.theorangeshow.co.uk.
Compositions page...
I've been doing a bit of writing and recording - check out the compositions page where you can download mp3s.
More live recording...
I got a decent minidisc recording of a gig at The Old Farmhouse in Bath on 15th November 2002- check out the sounds page for some samples.
A visit to the home of jazz!...
During a visit to New Orleans in April 2002, I was watching the great trumpeter Jamil Sharif play at the Maison Bourbon jazz club on Bourbon street, and was lucky enough to sit in for a tune (photo below with Jamil on my right). It was one of those once in a lifetime opportunities! I didn't really listen to much traditional New Orleans jazz previously, but I've got a CD of his and it's great. It was a real honour to sit in with him - I've never heard a trumpet player as poweful or soulful. Thanks to drummer Stanley for inviting me to sit in. If you visit New Orleans, you must go and see Jamil and the guys.
