Big Don ...
...Mk4 4 Motion Vr6 Golf
This car marked the beginning of my Vee-Dub Love as practically all my good
friends had one, even my mum had a golf so it was about time for me to
join the "In Crew".
I found this black 100bhp black Mk4 1.6 8V in pretty much mint condition at
Empress motors in Walthamstow. I was quite punchy and nippy, but looked
like a sales rep's car so time to add some Bling after 2 weeks of looking
at wheels I settled for a set of 18" RC design full chrome wheels from
Germany which I found at B1 tyres and wheels Leyton, the following week a
visit to the max power live show facilitated the purchase of Lexus look
rear lights which were installed before leaving the show!!!!!
Well this made an impact the car started to look like a modded dub and
started to attract boy racers who wanted a piece of me. So now the car
started to look better it needed to perform better so at Inters 04 a K&N
induction kit was purchased and installed the very next day, Ahhh now we
were breathing a lot better the car moved a little bit quicker. Also
purchased were some blingy bits 4 chrome door handle covers and chrome
indicator surrounds, and a chrome front grill, (we're blinging).
So onto Santa Pod in April 05, a quarter mile strip, a polo 1.4 in lane 2
and a top time of 18.8 seconds, ok not the fastest time but also not the
slowest considering its a 1.6 and it got faster times that 1 or 2 GTi's
(Obviously naturally aspirated ones). Loads of fun but now I ha a need for
speed!!!
GTI summer festival Santa Pod 05, this met Big Don with some new muscle
(Personal Trainer Shorty Downing), a Piper Cross induction kit from a VR6,
modified air intake hose to accommodate another small air filter, a twin
exit 3.5" Asso back box, 15" Mk3 Gti wheels at the front retaining the 18"
wheels at the rear to increase down force, and the removal of all the junk in
the trunk.
So up against another Polo this time a more serious contender Terrifying
Tim with his mean looking Mk4 Polo 1.6 and the heat was on!!!! Big Don
only just beating Tim (due to higher rev range), but this time produced a
somewhat more respectable time of 17.8 seconds, which clinched the trophy
for the 1600-1800 stock cars, which is proudly displayed on the mantle in my
living room.
Soon after the this triumph disaster struck and the gearbox gave up the
ghost for a 2nd time, so Big Don was parked up for 5-6 weeks whilst the box
was being fixed and expertly welded by Al (G-Force defying, G60).
Well at this point a decision had to be made Keep Big Don and risk another
gearbox failure because I had more plans for speed increase or bite the
bullet and get some thing else.........................................
