... Mk1 1.8 8v Golf
Alright this car you can see now is the 2nd generation of this style car. The 1st one lovingly known to everyone as Taloola after the beat up sled in cool running was found on the side of the road looking very depressed in west ham colours complete with bubbles!! Anyway months of work in the garage with good friends Rodney, Tim James and Jon saw a number of interesting developments one day after an engine rebuild we had the carburettor fire a flame 2 foot high I ran leaving Tim in the car wetting his pants and me laughing half way down the drive. After finally getting rid of the nasty bubbles we took the car for a re-spray.. Well I say that I got my ex to drive the car and on the way the suspension turrets collapsed so with my trusty Volvo I dragged the dead golf back to the garage to strip.
Part 2 Subtle T was born, just 2 days previous to this I was offered a mk1 1800gti 8v it was also in a sorry state wouldn’t start had 3 flats but was cheap and available at the time so all the cosmetic changes that were put on Taloola were transferred to the lovely off white and rusty Subtle T. Just 2 months down the road we had it running and it actually went past 3k revs a real achievement for a Haynes taught mechanic and a little help from his friends. Still a couple more visits from my good friend and mechanic Rodney has the car running smoothly and ready for a spray. Off to Keith of Chameleon Custom for a custom colour to suit my current mood and a number of other mods that we arranged to look factory. A few months down the line and the spray was done so off to the alarm shop for the electric windows, central locking and Clifford alarm. Next on the list were sounds I wanted a beautiful rumble so off the engine went to Volkspares for the 2l conversion. Now of all the troubles I had this was the worst, after being over time, and over budget they sent my car back to me running on 3 cylinders and running like shit. Not wanting them to ever touch it again I stripped down the engine once again to rebuild it.
Once I was able to drive it was time to sort a stereo. So I went down to Hendon car stereos and met Owen another VW nut and a big help, stereo was sorted and still had change so went to Steven's dismantlers to get a mk2 16v brake conversion (rear discs and up rated master cylinder and servo) now my car could drive well and even stop a rare thing for a mk1 to actually stop well. This was how it remained for a little while going to ace I met a few people and got a lot of love from many people but the Westside lot decided that they were too good to talk to me so didn’t join any groups till disaster struck and my head blew up (oops I think I pushed it a little too hard). Tim had now started a job for Audi and met Shorty who had a nice VR6 and some good contacts. Having seen my car about a few times Shorty was quick to help and send me to the mad scientist known as lucky, This mentalist said that he could get my car done but he wanted to do some other head work whilst it was in bits, well after he quoted me a price that was cheaper than replacing the engine (as other “specialists” had said) I sent the car to him and waited. Soon I got the call with Santa Pod the next day we all met to get my car all back together in time to race. It was a long night and at 4:40am we finally finished 8 people up all night just to get up a 7 to go to the pod.
Once again the car decided to play up giving me no electric to the dash so instead of racing down the pod I was beside it taking my dash out to sort the problem, not really an issue for me since I was closest to the BBQ anyways so I was happy. Now the car was running fine until I wanted to change the brakes for the 1st time the other day on the front to find the slide bolts on the callipers were missing and callipers hanging, this is a simple procedure to fix BUT VW have decided that they don’t make the parts anymore so I have to do a bodge to get it through the mot whilst I decide on what to change the brakes to now. There are many other mods that have been made but you will have to come see us to find out more. Dub industry aren’t just car nuts but more of a team and family we host many events, club nights and my favourite the BBQ’s soon to come the DI cruise watch this space…… O yeah and my time with the tweaked engine!!!
