Kim ...

         ... Mk1 Golf cabriolet

.

Now as we know Shorty likes things to be difficult, Kimberley is no exception (perfect match or what) so Kimberley was looking for her first car, now this should be easy as Shorty works in the car industry but no, instead of looking through auto trader or even going via Shorty’s work place they go down to the local breakers and there it was tucked up in the corner a 1986 Mk1 Golf cabriolet. At this point your thinking Ok not a bad thing it’s a classic an all time icon it’s got to be in fairly good nick…. WRONG! It had been sitting for a year without the roof up, so the interior looked more like a park, as for the paint faded was not the word, you couldn’t see your shadow let alone a reflection… body work wasn’t brilliant but it was straight and need two new cills, so with only one owner from new and all the service history money soon exchanged hands.

Next came the hard work of getting it road worthy, first things first, we all need some thing to sit so a Mk2 golf interior was sourced. Out came the standard interior, including the carpet.

The metal work was now treated to some rust prevention, carpet steam cleaned a re-installed. With the dash out all the wiring was exposed so the complete wiring was re loomed and the installation of the red LED dash took place. With the dash now in it was time for the seats to go in, fronts no problem, just got to slide in the rear ones…Er! On the other hand, what a pain. So with time ticking away and Kimberley getting inpatient and wanting her car, Shorty just decide to re cover the existing seats with the new cloth. Got the interior s looking nice, clean and fresh it was time for a few accessories. Kim being Kim wanted the interior to be a bit vibrant so she purchased some blood red leather for the re-trim of the gear and handbrake gaiter (yes we know you can buy them already in red but they don’t fit the mark one and the only company that sell them ready to fit don’t do red, If Kim wants red she gets red. To top of the bright red leather there’s a chrome ball gear knob complete with sleeve, a Momo steering wheel gave it a sporty feel.

So now that Kim could sit in the car without a gas mask and plastic trousers it was time to get the car running and the body work sorted. A phone call to Luckie saw the Mk1 towed to the body shop where the fitting of a Mk2 side cill was put on the Mk1. Whist this was being carried out Shorty was back at home in his garage rebuilding an engine to throw in so Kim could run about in the car.

Fast forward a bit, car on the road MOT’d, new cills, great, now came the restoration of the paint work. Bumpers came off, all the trims, skirts etc removed and just about to start the sanding and smoothing down when Shorty decides to colour cut one of the wings with 1200 wet and dry and polish it up. WOW it came up a beautiful pillar box red, so there it begun Shorty colour-cut the whole car from top to toe  in 1200 wet and dry then polished the whole thing only to compound it back down and polish it again. A whole day and I mean a whole day of hard work the car was gleaming, but then the let down was the steel rims. They would have to go. First came along a polished set of 15” Renault Clio rims, that a lot better but still not ready to show Kim yet. A trip down to Hoods Galore got a complete new roof fitted. Now the car was really looking crisp but on the way back Shorty pops into see an old friend and ends up purchasing a set of 17” urban racer 7 rims in a black shadow chrome finish. Now its time to deliver Kimberley's car to her.

WOW she loved it but Shorty being his usual self was not happy so it has since had a 40mm drop and is currently waiting the return of a set of 16”x8.5” Borbet rims (ooooohhhhhh nice)

And If you haven't worked it out, Shorty's her boy friend.
