Responder Scheme
2003 - 2011

Responder Scheme

Duxford Fire and Rescue Service operated a Community First Responder Scheme

originally set up with MAGPAS - (Mid Anglia General Practitioners Accident Service)

Covering the local villages of; Duxford, Ickleton, Hinxton,  Thriplow, Fowlmere,

Pampisford, and if its Responders were unavailable- Whittlesford ,

The scheme started operating in early 2003, and in 2010 was taken over

by the East Anglian Ambulance Trust

The aim of a First Responder Scheme is to provide fast interim care

such as oxygen or a defibrillator (in the event of strokes, or cardiac arrest)

To a patient while an ambulance is on the way

In early 2011 - the Ambulance trust built on the existing trauma care

Skills of Duxford’s Fire Service crew, by giving them a new qualification

- The First Person on Scene (intermediate) a 5 day course, dealing with

Trauma, and spinal care, in addition to Oxygen, this training enables

Those qualified to administer Entonox for interim pain relief.

This new training plus additional equipment meant that the schemes

Crew members became Co-Responders

Due to staffing and budget constraints because of the current financial

Situation, the Duxford scheme had to be phased out in late 2011
