CHARNLEY KNOCKOUT COMPETITION, CUP FINAL 2005 East Cheshire progressed to the Final of the Charnley Cup Knockout Competition in 2004 - 2005. Below are some photos of the event, which was played on 14th April 2005 at Stockport chess club. Stockport beat us 6 - 0, but each game was hard fought and John Reed on top board only lost in the last few minutes of the rapidplay finish.

Above left: Ben Topper on board 4 is about to start, while Dave Newell and David Hulmes shake hands at board 2 (note the Charnley Cup on display). Above right: John Reed waits for his opponent to arrive at board 1, and watches Dave Newell's opening play.

Above left: sadly, it looks like mate for Ben Topper on board 4, playing against the much stronger Mike Taylor, with Peter King watching. Above right: the last stages of John Reed's struggle against Stockport's star player, L van der Linden (ECF grade ca. 200), watched by East Cheshire's Dave Owens.

On the left you can see Geoff Clarke (Club Secretary) starting a Queen's Pawn game against David Taylor, on a clubnight.
