North Hill Community Litter Project

Background

North Hill is a rural parish with beautiful countryside on the eastern edge of Bodmin Moor. A small group of local people, concerned about the problem of litter on the roads, met together to prepare to do some litter picking on the roads in their parish.
Some in the group had attended meetings of L.I.T.T.E.R. (Lanson’s Initiative To Tackle Environmental Refuse) and this project is working in partnership with both L.I.T.T.E.R. and Clean Cornwall.

The project
The group quickly realized that the local community would be able to help prevent littering, so the project was launched with these aims:

To raise awareness about the problem of litter.
To prevent littering on roads and public spaces in this parish.
To keep roads and public spaces in our parish litter free.

Picking, Prevention and Partners

The importance of community involvement and prevention is essential, with the three Ps central to the Litter Free Project - Picking, Prevention and Partnership.
Many local businesses, organizations and groups are supporting the project and have become Community Partners. They will be doing all they can to help prevent littering.

Working in Partnership

North Hill Community Litter Project is working in partnership with L.I.T.T.E.R., North Cornwall District Council and Clean Cornwall.

L.I.T.T.E.R.
Lanson’s Initiative To Tackle Environmental Refuse.
This group has brought together councillors, the NCDC Street Ranger and local volunteers to work together in the Launceston area to eradicate dropped rubbish, through direct action and education. www.launcestonlitter.org.uk

NCDC
North Cornwall District Council actively support the project who provide litter picking equipment and collect the sacks of litter immediately after a litter pick. The NCDC Senior Street Ranger (Bude & Launceston) is developing awareness raising/prevention roadside signs that are used following a litter pick, similar to our own 'Robin signs'.
