May 2009
Our verges and hedgerows are looking wonderful again this year and litter becomes hidden beneath the new growth but we will continue to search and collect as before. Our new sturdier signs, displayed after picks should withstand wind and weather more successfully.
Members of our group joined forces with employees of Cornwall Council on 17th April to pick on B3254 and B3257. 16 sacks of litter were collected. One of our members has “adopted” two lay-bys on B3257 which he will check and pick as necessary. On April 18th some members were joined by some very eagle eyed children to collect litter from our two village halls as part of the community event for “Spring Clean Cornwall” week. We know they enjoyed and learnt from the experience and hope they will pass on the message “Don’t drop litter” to their friends and relatives. Thank you to all of them. Photos of the members and helpers can be seen on the web site where a full list of 32 supporting partners and more information can be seen.
126 sacks of litter have been picked since the group was formed in November 2007. At Coads Green there are new litter and dog poo collection bins.
Roger Catchpole, our co-ordinator attended a task group meeting meeting on 14th May where it was reported that there were 200 litter picking groups active in the county during Clean Cornwall week. Hope was expressed that many of these groups will follow our example and become permanent. Also during that week 300 large sacks of litter were collected by council employees from the A30 and A38 and plans are in place to provide boxed-in recycling bins for car litter in the A road lay-bys. Litter prevention signs have been requested for our local road lay-bys.
