Litter Picking
Why do it?
“We care about our local environment – it’s
important.” North Hill parish resident
|
| Our
beautiful, natural environment is something special and
important for us all - for those of us lucky enough to live
here and for visitors to Cornwall.
We take pride in our parish and want to see
it litter-free.
Volunteer litter pickers go out reasonably
regularly or when they see there is a need. Our parish roads
are safe enough for us to pick whenever we decide to do so.
The B3254 and B3257 need the Council team with the lorry to
ensure our safety.
Following our picks we put out the 'robin
signs' to raise awareness, to let you know that we've picked
and essentially to help achieve our main aim which is to
prevent littering. |

|
The picking process
When our project began, in 2007, we set up
the following process to tackle the litter problems on our local
roads:
|
1 |
Risk Assessment |
All pickers have initial
training and appropriate kit including high visibility
jackets. |
|
2 |
Deep
pick |
This
is the first pick and reveals all the old litter deep in the
undergrowth. |
|
3 |
Record |
We
record on maps the routes to pick.
We record the
number of sacks of litter collected. |
|
4 |
Collection of sacks |
After a deep pick NCDC collect
the sacks of litter from a pre-arranged collection point.
|
|
5 |
Grade the road |
See litter grades (DEFRA Code). |
|
6 |
Promote the anti-littering message |
Put out roadside signs (for 3 days).
Regular reports in the parish newsletter. |
|
7 |
Maintenance picks |
For group or individuals at intervals
depending on amount of litter observed.
Complete record sheets to monitor what type of litter is being
collected and how much.
Maintenance picks will show the progress
towards litter free roads.
|
|
7 |
Record, grade & monitor |
|
8 |
Ongoing publicity
to promote the anti-littering message more widely. |
Roadside signs.
Parish newsletter reports.
Liaise with our community partners. |
|

Deep pick
This is the initial pick, revealing all the old
litter deep in the undergrowth as well as clearing surface litter.
We work as a team, splitting into pairs to complete different
sections of the route.
Resulting sacks of litter are collected on the day
of the pick by NCDC.
|
|
Maintenance picks
Following up the deep pick a maintenance pick will
take place when needed.
Individuals taking responsibility for particular roads within the
parish will usually do this.

Joining forces with NCDC
Our latest two major litter picks (November) have been in
conjunction with North Cornwall District Council Street Rangers,
covering the sections of the B3254 and B3257 in the parish. This
was a really successful way of working and we hope to continue
this each year. |
