North Hill Community Litter Project

Working together for a cleaner parish
In the Cornish parish of North Hill local people decided it was time to challenge the littering problems and gain the support of the community. This project is not just about litter picking - it's all about the three Ps:
Picking, Prevention and Partners.

Raising awareness, highlighting the anti-littering message and work on prevention are vital.
This project is showing how people in a community are successfully working together for a litter free environment, and in partnership with the local authority. We hope that other parishes throughout Cornwall and UK will join the anti-littering movement.

Our Aims are:

1. to raise awareness about the problem of litter
2. to prevent littering on roads and public spaces in this parish
3. to keep roads and public spaces in our parish litter free.

Litter Picking
Why do it?

Whilst there is litter is on our roads and public spaces litter picking is essential. Not only is litter unsightly and offensive, it can cause problems and gives the impression that we don't care. Also we believe that litterers are less likely to drop litter in a clean environment.

We were pleased to find that by the following morning it had been cleared up - so thank you to whoever was responsible for disposing of it!

Prevention
How can littering be prevented?

It seems that litter is now so much part of our
environment that it is tolerated - even in our beautiful Cornish countryside!
So we must raise awareness about the litter problem
and we all need to realize that the causes of litter can be addressed. By working together within the community and with partners we will be able to find ways to prevent littering.

Partners
What can Partners do?

Partners in the community are showing their support
for the project by doing what they can to help eliminate
litter, such as keeping their car park, roadside or public
area free of litter and displaying a LITTER FREE
project certificate.
Partners help to reinforce the anti-littering message. Also we are
able to talk with partners about the problems and solutions from
their perspective.

Working in Partnership
Can this help other parishes and towns?

We are working in partnership with Clean Cornwall, North Cornwall
District Council and LITTER (the Launceston group). We hope
that our ideas and actions may be able to help other groups develop
anti-littering programmes.

Project background
How did the project start?Litter pickers meet up at the end of a pick - phew!

In 2007 a small group of local people, concerned about the problem of litter on the roads, met together to prepare to do some litter picking in their parish. Ideas about prevention and working with the community developed and, with support from LITTER and NCDC, the project took off!

Why is it important?

We value our rural environment and we see litter as an insult.
We want everyone in the community to support the project. It is vital that  the attitude of litterers is challenged and changed!
The countryside is important for us all and our project is part of a wider movement to keep towns and
countryside litter free!

What about the rest of Cornwall and the UK?

We are working in partnership and actively involved with 'Clean Cornwall'.

The purpose of the Clean Cornwall Spring Challenge is to establish a programme of litter picking and related activity across Cornwall to:

Increase awareness and understanding of the impact of litter

Recognise the achievements of existing anti litter efforts

Encourage local ownership of the problem by individual communities

Promote a sense of local pride and celebrate Cornwall's special environment

So please help by getting your community on board!
Check out the Clean Cornwall website >

Across the UK  individuals and groups are concerned by how
litter is affecting the countryside and urban areas.
'Litter Action' is supporting local action across the UK. Our
project is registered with Litter Action.
