This is Maureen's version of events. (I knew she'd disagree!)
I first came across handbell ringing whilst at Ecclesfield Grammar School. The school team were playing Waltz of the Flowers at a concert. I thought it sounded great (it’s still one of my favourites) and wanted to have a go at ringing, but unfortunately they didn’t have any vacancies.
It wasn’t until I had returned to Sheffield in 1980, after living in various places around the country, that I came across handbell ringing again through an old school friend who was still ringing with the village team at that time. She invited me along to a practice and I have been with the team ever since.
Even from my early days with the team I fancied having a go at playing in the treble section, so when the opportunity finally arose many years later (after playing in middle bass and then top tenor) I didn’t need to be asked twice! Handbell ringing has been my ‘therapy’ at times, as it never fails to cheer me up and make me forget my troubles. I always look forward to the Wednesday night practice. The team are a good bunch and we get on great (most of the time!).
