Feltscape Wall-hangings
Felt-making Workshop for Primary Schools
Pupils learn the art of felt-making and create a large artwork for permanent display in school. Inspiration can be taken from the surrounding landscape, a school visit or class topic.
The starting point for this piece was an inspiring photograph. The children first learnt how to scale up the image, then worked in pairs to create sections of the picture, looking very carefully at the proportions and colours. They laid down wool fibres, then wet-felted them with lots of warm water, locally-made soap and plenty of elbow grease.
The process was an ideal opportunity to reinforce some maths and science vocabulary including vertical - horizontal - ¼ turns/ 90 degree turns – friction
