Club Handicap Race

Organised by Ron Hope from 1988 up until 1999, the Club Handicap is held along the Links road through Seaton Sluice, past Feather's caravan site, past St. Mary's Island and back along the clifftops to Collywell Bay Road, before rejoining the Links Road to the finish. Prior to 1993 the race was held on a Wednesday evening over 10.7 miles or so, and on a different route around the Keel Row, Seaton Delaval Hall, etc., but the route was changed partly due to traffic considerations. It has been held on more or less the current course since 1993; this year use was made of part of the new footpath along the dunes, and a slight diversion was necessary due to clifftop erosion at around the five mile point.  This year's race was organised by Andy Brown, with assistance from Dave Kitching, and both did a sterling job. The weather could have been better, (no, I'm not blaming Andy and Dave!) although it stayed dry there was a very strong northerly wind, which made the return half quite testing for many of the runners. Despite the conditions, there were the first new category records since 1997, for Rob Hall and Shiela Greener
