CLUB NEWS AND RACE RESULTS

The races for the 2001-2002 Grand Prix season are listed below. The event is scored by counting the best 8 from 11, from all categories. The reduction in events was due to the unfortunate cancellation of the Northumberland Coastal Run (formerly the "Phoenix"), which was a casualty of FMD.

Race 1 - Keswick Half Marathon 6th May 2001

It doesn't seem 5 minutes since I wrote about last year's Keswick race, and how hot it was. This year the race was run in very similar conditions, and this was reflected in the slower times of most BRC runners. Looking at the times I can see one or two people who must have suffered more than most on this undulating course. I hear there was some local opposition to the race in evidence in the form of posters around the course, but this didn't prevent the number of finishers remaining almost the same as last year (488).  First home for BRC was Andy Brown, and Anne Potts was first BRC lady; I think Ian Richardson was second MV50, he'll be pleased they got his age right....

Race 2 - Club Handicap 3rd June 2001

Organised by Andy Brown and Dave Kitching, this year's race was contested along a slightly different route. Due to part of the new cycle and walkway being closed due to FMD, all of the path could not be incorporated, however the southern half was open, and this was included for the first time. First home, and quite a surprise package, was Adam Robinson's 12 year old son Ryan, making his debut at any organised event, so I think we'll see a lot more of him in the coming years. Since he is a Junior, and not eligible for the senior prize, the trophy was awarded to the fast improving Sharon Percy, who just seems to get faster and faster. Fastest net time was recorded by Andy Brown, and fastest lady was Helen Morris. Turnout was up from 43 last year, to 47.

Race 3 - Blaydon Race 9th June 2001

Run in "monsoon" conditions, everybody was completely soaked before they had even crossed the start line. Fortunately there was hardly any wind, so it didn't feel cold, at least until the finish when everyone was queing for their "goodies". Once again it was Andy Brown who lead our runners in, with Helen Morris our first lady. With the size of the field, (3,100) it was always going to be difficult getting on the prizelist, but well done to Denis Moss (2nd V70), and Sheila Greener (1st LV50) for doing just that.
