Grand Prix 1998-1999

Keswick Half Marathon    Blaydon Race    Tynedale 10k    Club Handicap    Coastal Run

Morpeth 10k    Links 10k    Derwentside 10m    Tynedale 10m     Brampton to Carlisle 10m

Morpeth to Newcastle 14m    Redcar Half Marathon

The first event of the season was the Keswick Half Marathon on Sunday May the 10th, unfortunately this event clashed with two others in the area and some of our members were elsewhere. Seven were doing the Castles Relay, whilst others were at the Blyth Valley Triathlon. The Castles Relay is held in north Northumberland, in the area around Norham, Berwick, Wooler and Holy Island; our team of 7 managed third place from the 10 teams taking part. Because of other events, etc. we only turned out 13 runners for the Keswick event although encouragingly the total race turnout was up from last year's figure of 430, to a healthy 470 finishers.

The Blaydon Race was the next event in the Grand Prix, on the 9th of June as ever, and there too the overall number of finishers was up from last year's 2057 to 2331 this time. Maybe things are looking up again after several years of dwindling numbers at many races. BRC turned out 58 runners, less than last year's 69 but still a good turnout. Not in the Grand Prix, but still popular with members, is the Newburn River Run; we had a fair number of runners in this event  on Wednesday June the 17th. Andy Brown was 5th overall and 4th senior, Ian Richardson was 12th, Dave McKenzie was 13th, and Anne Best was 1st o40 lady. Well done to them all.

The third race of the season, the Tynedale 10k was held at Ovingham on the 1st of July. Conditions were pretty good for running, neither too hot or cold. 48 runners from BRC took part, one more than last year, although the total number of finishers was down from 471 to 420. Andy Brown made a winning start to his Grand Prix season, finishing 7th overall in a time of 33 minutes dead. Anne Best was first L40 in 42.22,and Denis Moss was second V70 in 49.34, followed by Bob Soulsby (but not straight away!) who was third V70, in 65.31. BRC took 2nd, 4th and 9th male team places from 18, and the ladies team was 4th from 10. In the men's vets section the best BRC team was 7th from 42.

The Club Handicap was held on Sunday July 12th, along the familiar Links course to St. Mary's Island and past Feather's Caravans. Not so familiar was the weather - horizontal rain blown from the south by a cool wind, making everybody wonder what they were doing outside when they might have been reading the Sunday papers in the house. Still, the pull of the Grand Prix did wonders for the turnout with 33 starters as against only 20 last year. This is the 11th year that Ron Hope has done the handicaps, and once again the bulk of the runners finished inside a fairly tight time range. Thanks to Ron, and also to Mark Walbank for timekeeping and to Jim Jones and Barney Foster for marshalling. The event was won by Steve Walker, followed by Joe Potts in second place and Dave Kitching in third. Andy Brown was fastest male on the day, and Helen Freeman the fastest lady. For obvious reasons, the Grand Prix points are worked out on actual times.
