Blaydon Race - 9th June 1999

The Blaydon Race was the first event in the Grand Prix, on the 9th of June as ever. This year's event attracted a record number of entrants, and the good weather conditions helped to see both the men's and women's course records broken. First lad home for Blyth from the 75 who took part, was Andy Brown in 20th place, and Jacqui Lumsden led our lasses home in a time of 38:57. Dave Kitching was fourth V55, and Denis Moss won the V70 category. In the "Me and wor lass" category George and Cath Young placed fifth. Gareth Hope just missed getting his name in the paper by finishing fifth U19 out of 50. Well done to you all.

Newburn River Run - 16th June 1999

Another Wednesday, another very pleasant evening, and another category 'A' race for the second event of the season, the Newburn River Run.  This race is on a bit smaller scale to last week's Blaydon Race, and is run over a much different type of course, along the river between Newburn and Wylam, and very enjoyable it is too (apart from the steps up to the bridge at the end!).  Once again it was Andy Brown who led home the 43 strong Blyth contingent in 6th place, and Jacqui Lumsden who was first Blyth lady home. Jacqui was 7th Lady, Anne Best was 1st L45, Helen Morris was 3rd L35. Perhaps best of all, Denis Moss won the M70 category wearing ordinary walking shoes after his wife had "tidied up" his running shoes from the boot of his car where he kept them!

Northumberland Coastal Run - 18th July 1999

For the first time anybody could remember it wasn't a sunny day for the Northumberland Coastal Run, the first category 'C' race, however it didn't spoil the event as the combination of the damp conditions, lack of any real wind, and the tide being two hours down the beach all helped to make conditions ideal for running.  First home for Blyth was Rob Hall out of the 42 who took part, with Jacqui Lumsden first back for the ladies.  I don't know who the category prizewinners were as the result sheet shows only two categories each for ladies and men; however Rob was shown as 4th M1 and Jacqui was in the first ten ladies.  The entry was marginally down (819)on last year (835).  On a personal note I'd like to thank Stephen Inglis from Alnwick for his support as we ran the course together, and to wish him all the best for his Marathon debut this winter in the "Big Apple".   I didn't get the feeling back in my legs until Wednesday morning but I still enjoyed every step!
