Useful Tip

If your computer is connected to the Internet using a dial-up modem and other communications devices (e.g. telephones and FAX machines) share the same telephone line, then this could impact your modem performance and significantly reduce transmission rates, even when the other devices are not in use.

Temporarily disconnecting all other devices could result in your modem operating at maximum available speeds. For example, a 56K modem could operate at around 50K instead of 28K.
