| Eliza Hurdle trained in ceramics
at Bristol Polytechnic, finishing her degree in 1991. Her work is inspired by nature and
mythology, mermaids, the sea and its associations. The imagery is skillfully
intertwined to form elegant functional pieces. The original
designs are carved in plaster or clay, the detailing of each piece makes this a long
process. A plaster mould can then be made from the original. The pots are carefully cast
and hand finished, then painted with oxides and underglaze colours and covered with a
clear, bright earthenware glaze.
Having recently moved to rural southwest Wales, Eliza has been inspired to
design new pieces. She is working on a range featuring birds of both water and the air and
maybe a few fairies or angels.
The Mermaid range has been in high demand since its creation, the teapot
being particularly sought after since being featured in a specialist book about teapots by
Tina Carter. |
