The jewellery I design and create is inspired by a love for the beauty of nature and colour. For me, trying to capture the elemental qualities of the natural world by bringing individual colours and tones together harmoniously is the most fulfilling aspect of making jewellery. I have always been fascinated with semi-precious stones, which, in my opinion, are often undervalued in comparison with the archetypal precious gemstones that are traditionally prized such as Diamonds, Sapphires, Rubies and Emeralds. It seems to me that a piece of polished Jasper or Fluorite is just as attractive and appealing as a faceted Diamond, plus, there is the added dimension of greater diversity in the many different colours, shades and forms that semi-precious stones take.

Some people believe that gemstones have special spiritual and mystical powers and that when worn or held their healing energies are transferred to the wearer or holder. Many books on this subject have been published and there is a wealth of information to be found on the Internet offering insight into the spiritual attributes that stones and crystals are said to retain. I have a large (and ever-growing!) collection of crystals which I have long enjoyed for both their aesthetic as well as their healing qualities and so incorporating them into my work was a logical progression, and one which I find extremely gratifying. I live in the West Midlands and I always try to source as many of my materials as possible from nearby towns and villages in order to support local communities and minimise the effect of my activities on the environment. Sometimes, however, this is not possible due to a lack of retail outlets in the region that stock semi-precious stones. In instances when I must look further afield for materials, I buy in bulk as far as possible in order to decrease the frequency with which I need to do so, thus diminishing the impact that the transportation of goods has on the environment. Essentially, I try to create jewellery that is pleasing to the eye and consequently I am drawn to combining colours that are found together in nature. For instance blues, creams and neutral shades depict the sky and the shoreline, muted greens and rich browns are reminiscent of woodlands, turquoise, deep greens and vibrant blues remind me of the ocean in dazzling sunlight, whilst shades of purples, reds and pinks evoke the stunning spectacle of a sunrise. My principal objective is to design original (bespoke on request) pieces of handcrafted jewellery that enhance and compliment the natural beauty of the stones used and which ultimately will bring lasting pleasure to the wearer. |
