about emmaus oxford

building the community

Like all Emmaus Communities, Emmaus Oxford has been established as a separate charity and is part of the Emmaus UK Federation. The Oxford trustees secured a site in Cowley,171 Oxford Road (opposite the police station and next to the redbrick URC Church, just before Between Towns Road on the way out of town) on which they subsequently obained planning permission to build a Community with 24 single bedrooms and various communal facilities for Companions. This building is now under construction: this is how it looked in August 2008 (right).

They were also able to purchase the adjacent semi-detached house, 169 Oxford Road. This will provide residential accommodation for Community staff, but at present is tenanted to bring in much-needed funding towards the charity's running costs. Our office is at the rear of the house.

The roof of the house can be seen in the background of this picture (left), behind the newly tiled tower of the Community building - September 2008.

the costs & timetable

Our partnership with Dominion Housing Group has meant the capital costs of the building are secured. However, we still need to raise an estimated £400,000 to equip the home, take over, equip and develop the furniture store where the companions will work, and run the whole project for an estimated four to five years until it becomes financially independent.

The building is scheduled for completion by the end of February 2009, with the first Companions moving in soon afterwards.
