Put up Your Web Site

In previous tutorials we have shown how to create banner ads and buttons for your Websites, but never how to upload all your creativity onto the World Wide Web, well this Masterclass tutorial will teach you how to get your site loaded.

Part 1: Software
When you join an ISP you will probably be given some Web space. How you upload into this space will be dependent on the ISP and our advice is that this is your first port of call for advice on uploading. For the tutorial we were using space provided by Freeserve. Freeserve advise that you use Terrapin software to upload your site. Terrapin is available as a free download for 30 days and then costs as little as £19.99 to keep if you are going to be uploading on a regular scale.

Uploading uses a system known as File Transfer Protocol or FTP. What this means is that you are transferring files from the local computer to the server of the Internet Service Provider (ISP). When you are looking at the information from your ISP, make sure that you read all the uploading information, as it is highly important.

At first the program looks very daunting and scary, but just think of it as a two step Windows Explorer. The bottom half is labelled local computer and is your computer. The top half is the server, this is the server of your ISP where you will be uploading your pages.

Toppers tip: Search the Web for free download

Part 2: Uploading
The next stage is to establish a connection with your ISP's server so that the files can be uploaded.

You will need to know the address of the server. Your ISP's website will probably tell you this, or if you call customer services they will know.

You will now notice in the 'Server' part of the Terrapin page that there is an Index page, your ISP puts this there automatically. If you don't have an index page you will need to keep this, otherwise remove it.

Toppers tip: Check files are correct before uploading

Part 3: Checking in browser
Once you have uploaded a page it is a good idea to load the program that you created the page in and remind yourself how it looks.

Once you have checked that the index page uploaded ok you will need to add the other pages of your Website.

You must click on 'Refresh' to check that the page you are looking at is the very latest and not one that is being held in the cache, which is a temporary memory. You may find pages do not upload instantly, it is not foolproof technology so you will have to be patient and reload pages and re-save them. But it is an easy process.
