Many people consult an acupuncturist for help with specific symptoms or
conditions. These include anxiety states, arthritis, asthma, back pain,
circulatory problems, high blood pressure, joint pains, migraines etc.
However, acupuncture aims at treating the patient as a whole. The
acupuncturist finds the cause of the illness and the imbalance of energy causing
it.
Acupuncture is a safe treatment for all age ranges.
Acupuncture treatment consists of the insertion of fine needles, usually of
stainless steel, into a few carefully selected points on the body so as to
rectify the imbalances diagnosed. Since the needles are fine, acupuncture is not
usually found to be painful. The number of needles used varies, often as few as
two or three, sometimes as many as fifteen. They are left in place for varying
amounts of time perhaps on average 15-20 minutes.
Acupuncture originated in China. Books now over two thousand years old that are
still in use today indicate that even at that time it was a developed system of
medicine with detailed theories on the workings of the human being.
In the Peoples Republic of China extensive training programs are in operation
with large teaching hospitals dedicated to the study, practice and research of
traditional methods. It is interesting to note that here the patient can choose
either Western or traditional Chinese medicine for their complaints. Already
long established in China, Korea, Japan and other far Eastern countries,
acupuncture is now increasingly seen as a safe and effective form of medicine,
which requires extensive and specialised training for its proper and effective
practice.
