Shiatsu literally means " finger pressure", and is a Japanese therapy     closely related to acupuncture.

  What's it for  ?

Instead of using needles to ease painful symptoms the practitioner applies gentle pressure to the body in the form of massage. This is combined with relaxed stretching to help improve flexibility and suppleness. Shiatsu is very relaxing and can help to relieve a variety of health problems such as respiratory illnesses, back pain and stiffness, headaches, tiredness, emotional stress and p.m.t.
Many people receive shiatsu to help relieve the effects of everyday stress caused by work or emotional anxiety. Shiatsu is very relaxing and supportive and can help calm the mind, allowing you to manage life in a more harmonious manner. This will also have a positive effect on your overall health.

  How is it done ?

Shiatsu is normally performed through clothing on a padded mat or futon mattress at floor level. During the treatment the shiatsu practitioner will apply gentle pressure along the body helping to correct any energetic imbalance. Any weak areas may be held for a few moments to energise that part of the body, or gentle to firm pressure may be used to sedate tense and sore muscles. The treatment is very relaxing and has an over-all calming effect on the body and mind. You can enjoy the experience of shiatsu as an occasional treatment to help you feel deeply relaxed and to improve general well-being.

  What is it ?

The shiatsu practitioner applies gentle pressure with thumbs, fingers and palms. This is a form of massage combined with relaxed stretching to help harmonize the energy levels in the body.
According to oriental medicine philosophies, energy called Qi ( chee ) circulates through the body by way of meridians or channels. These pathways relate to the energetic functions of the internal organs as well as the emotional, intellectual and spiritual levels. When a person is healthy the energetic patterns flow smoothly through the body.
Disease and symptoms are treated as an imbalance in energy. Emotional upset and work related stress can also affect the balance of energy.
