The Exmoor area, which includes parts of West Somerset and North Devon, has an abundance of walks, wildlife, historic monuments, and interesting villages and hamlets. (Many of which have good child-friendly pubs)

Easy routes for walkers, such as from Tarr Steps along the river Barle, are suitable for the not-so-adventurous, whereas, for those with a more demanding enthusiasm, the South West Coast Path starting at Minehead is a good option. We have many books and maps you may borrow.

Wildlife on the moor is extremely varied and includes several species not found in many other places. On most days you can see Red Deer- the largest of Britain's native mammals. (Ask us where to look!) In contrast certain very rare butterflies colonise parts of the moor. Birds, including Buzzards, Ravens, Peregrine Falcons, and Dartford Warblers amongst many other species are to be found. There is an exceptionally good Wildlife Information Centre at Malmsmead, which is in the`Doone Valley’, the setting of the famous novel`Lorna Doone’ - another wonderful walking area.

Historic sites and properties abound in the area, ranging from pre-historic burial sites , through rugged old churches like those at Stoke Pero and Exton, to the impressive Dunster Castle, where many Children's Activity Days are held.

With children in mind, Butlin's at Minehead open their doors to non-residents during most of the school holidays, and at certain other times. There are several Farm Parks and a small zoo within the area, also the West Somerset Railway running from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard.

All these attractions, plus many more, make Exton House ideal for families or groups to spend a few days.
