Dear Members and Fellow Gardeners
Let me reassure you, I am not obsessed by spiders, I really am not but………..as I was saying to a friend earlier today, I haven't been near my compost bin at least for the last couple of months because
it has become the home for some very strange looking "spiders".
What have I done wrong? I tried to keep putting in a balance of things as Brian Kidd has taught us over the years and everything seemed to move down the bin ready for some additions and I was
very pleased with the outcome – THEN - silly me decided to open up the little flap at the bottom. Any fellow arachnophobia will fully understand my horror as I found a positive dwelling of these
large (when I say large, I mean put a saddle on and ride them large) spiders very much at home and not amused at being disturbed. I very quickly put the little hatch back on and haven't been anywhere need the
compost bin since. When it starts moving round the garden of its own accord then I will have to call in the experts but at the moment the bin and its contents can live in peace without any interference from
me!! Obviously I have done something wrong or perhaps this is something other people have experienced – I would love to hear from you.
After the rains of most of the summer months, hasn't it been glorious these last few weeks, I think this is a lovely time of year when the garden has matured into such a jumble of colours and
shapes. Autumn is just around the corner which means, yes I knew you would guess, the AUTUMN SHOW - it is creeping up fast. As you can see from the schedule that accompanies this letter it is only
a small show, but has been growing over the years and takes place at the members meeting on the first Thursday in October (4th).
The judging will be followed by our usual members meeting. To help Joan, who lives at 17 Woodfield Avenue, could you possibly let her have your entries by Monday 1st October
– if it is easier these can be left with Chris Batstone at 26 Farlington Avenue or myself at 26 Lower Farlington Road. This is our last show of the year so please come along and support it. Don't forget
there is no charge for entry of exhibits plus we have pleasure in welcoming our newly appointed Vice President with us to judge the exhibits and then to talk to us about "Vegetables".
This is my last newsletter for this season, the next one means that Christmas and the New Year will have just happened and this is approach all too fast, so lets make the most of this lovely autumn
and enjoy the last few days of what feels like summer and with summer in mind can I take this opportunity to hand out a really big thank you to everyone who contributed to one of the best and most successful Summer
Shows we have held at the Methodist Hall. It was a really smashing show and a pleasure to see such a wide variety of winners. It was also good to see our President, and wife of our founder, Mrs June Smith
giving out the cups in this our Silver Jubilee year. It was a delightful and successful day enjoyed by us all. I hope you managed to see the picture of June's grand daughter in the paper – it was again a
great picture and lovely to see our Garden Club given a mention and publicity.
As Joan would say, "anyway", please don't forget to come along on the 4th October to view the autumnal varieties that are included in this show – its not just pumpkins, there
seems to be more and more variety of entries making it a really good evening all round.
Look forward to seeing you all there and if anyone can offer a home to a compost bin that is a home to some very weird looking spiders, let me know.
Best wishes Ann Howells Chairman
