Match Report

Falmouth crashed out of the FA Carlsberg Vase at the 2nd qualifying round stage after a poor performance against average opposition in the form of Toolstation Western League Division 1 outfit Clevedon United.
The home side peppered the Clevedon goal with shots in the opening period, but two quick goals before half time sealed Town’s fate.
It looked promising early on for Falmouth as in the second minute, Danny O’Hagan had the beating of the Clevedon defence, but put his shot just wide of the post.
Four minutes later the ball fell nicely for Nick Pugliese who hit a low volley which just went wide of the other post.
Matt Drummond supplied a good ball from the left to set up Neil Slateford whose shot was so high it cleared the stand behind the goal.
Clevedon’s stout defending and Town’s poor finishing kept the scores goalless. In the 28th minute, the net did shake but only because Drummond’s effort hit the side netting.
Five minutes later Ben Dancey in the Clevedon goal produced two fine saves in quick succession to deny Pugliese from the edge of the area then Drummond’s angled shot.
Nigel Thwaites hit a shot that went over before the visitors took the lead against the run of play in the 39th minute.
A slip in the home defence allowed Ryan King to run through and beat Bryan Scoffin.
Straight up the other end, Slateford was bundled off the ball on the edge of the area and Pugliese’s free kick bounced in front of Dancey but he parried the ball before it was cleared upfield.
Three minutes before the break, captain King noticed Scoffin off his line and superbly chipped the ball over him to secure a two goal cushion for the visitors who managed only three shots on goal in the first half.
The final chance of the half fell to Slateford who fumbled his shot wide.
Falmouth made a change eight minutes into the second half when Lee Coxon replaced Robin Teagle.
The game was over as a contest after 58 minutes when good build up play on the right wing and cross found Sam Clark unmarked in acres of space at the back post and he had the simple task of tapping the ball into the empty net.
The introduction of Ollie Gibson for Rob Carey in the 64th minute added a bit more urgency to Town’s cause and his pace at times had the Clevedon defence on the backfoot.
Half way through the second half, Hugh Howlett had a shot on goal but it was a comfortable catch for Dancey.
Pugliese picked up a yellow card, presumably for a foul in the 72nd minute and not long after, Clevedon made a change with Matt Fisher replacing Pawel Bartnikowski.
As the game entered the final ten minutes, the lacklustre home side again went close through Thwaites and Drummond before Dave Rawlings was booked for a foul as Clevedon launched a rare flurry into the Town half.
Tim Martin replaced Mark Armstrong in the 83rd minute before two minutes later; Falmouth gave a debut to 16 year old second team defender Jamie Webb who replaced the oldest player on the pitch, Nigel Thwaites.
To run the clock down a little more, the visitors brought on Leigh White to replace James Springett in the 90th minute.

Falmouth have a tough Thursday evening fixture when they entertain League new boys Perranporth in the Throgmorton Cup (7.30 kick off) and the following Wednesday host Bodmin Town in the league.
The reserve team have a fixture change on Saturday – they are away to Porthleven instead of St Just.
