Honours ended even in the mediocre clash at Waterslade Park which started 50 minutes later than scheduled.
The reason for this delay was that Falmouth turned up with their new yellow shirts which were practically identical to Clyst’s! Had it not been for a local supporter suggesting to Town’s Chairman Steve Kimberley that he could possibly get a spare set from Peninsula East Division club Exeter Civil Service then the game was in danger of being cancelled.
The game eventually kicked off in bright sunshine with Falmouth wearing white shirts, courtesy of the Civil Service side.
The first fifteen minutes were fairly even with both teams failing to make any serious in roads on goal and the midfield being clogged up with the players unable to get the ball into any danger areas.
Clyst had a good break out wide on the right and the ball found its way into the middle but the shot was hit on the run and went wide.
Falmouth had a free kick midway through the half and the ball found its way to Ben Stidwell whose first time shot was pushed away by home keeper Nick Moyse.
A few minutes later Stidwell went on a good run up the right wing and his attempted cross was deflected for a corner which the keeper punched clear.
Town’s new left back Robin Teagle had a good run and cross which was put out for a corner which resulted in Sean Flynn’s shot being cleared off the line, the ball was put back into the middle and the keeper pushed it out for a corner, which was followed by two more in quick succession.
Clyst attempted to break through Town’s defence but Tom Smith was in dominant form and he was marshalling the defence well around him.
Five minutes before half time Lee Coxon put over a fine cross to Dave Rawlings but he hurried his shot and it flew wide.
Just before half time, Town keeper Jason Chapman was the victim of a hard challenge by a Clyst striker and had to play the second half with his shoulder strapped up.
Falmouth started the second half on the offensive and forced another two corners in as many minutes, but again their forwards failed to take advantage of the situations with the home defence clearing the danger.
Nick Pugliese combined well with Rob Carey before playing the ball in to Danny O’Hagan but he was closed down by Scott Baxter and his fellow defenders and the chance was gone.
Clyst’s new signing Frank Nomah-Komeh caught the eye on several occasions with his strong runs at the visiting defence but on the occasions he did find a way through, Chapman thwarted him with some fine one on one saves.
After 63 minutes Hugh Howlett came on to replace Nigel Thwaites who had had a busy game in midfield but with no reward for his efforts.
A few minutes later Town worked a good three man move with Sean Flynn playing the ball out to Stidwell on the right who then played it back in to him and he put over a looping cross which ended with O’Hagan’s powerful header going just over the bar.
Clyst keeper Moyse made another couple of good saves from close range efforts by Howlett and O’Hagan in particular.
Two minutes from time, Robin Teagle retaliated to a rough tackle and referee Ioan Ignat sent him off but only had words with the Clyst offender.
In the final minute Town forced their 13th corner of the match and as a matter of interest Clyst did not have any corners at all during the game.
