Match Report

Sean Flynn heads goalwardsCullompton kept battling to the last minute as they never gave up the chase at a sunny Bickland Park on Saturday.
Falmouth were on the attack through most of the first half and if their finishing had been more accurate they could have been four or five goals clear at the interval.
Cullompton keeper Garnsworthy does well to tip the ball awayTown took the lead after just five minutes. Bobby Bryant put over a long ball from the left which found Matt Drummond coming in on the right and he hit the ball into the middle where Ryan Fice volleyed home from close in with a defender on his heels.
A couple of minutes later Fice played a good ball to his strike partner Danny O’Hagan but he delayed his shot just long enough for visiting keeper Chris Garnsworthy to adjust his position and he blocked the effort comfortably.
Ryan Fice grabbed the first two goalsCullompton equalised after 16 minutes when a rare defensive lapse from Sean Flynn as his attempted header back to reserve team keeper Bryan Scoffin was intercepted by Harry Taylor and the striker shot home from 12 yards.
Falmouth were straight back on the attack forcing a corner which saw the ball eventually drop to Tom Barwell but his strong shot was well saved by the keeper at the expense of another corner which ended with the impressive Matt Drummond hitting a fierce shot just wide of the far post.
Cullompton launched a rare attack which saw Scoffin make a good save from Nick Murray’s long range shot, pushing the ball out for a corner.
Matt Drummond received a good ball from Dan Green, playing his final game for Falmouth after a month loan from Truro, and cut in goalwards from the right before setting up O’Hagan but his shot from just inside the area flew narrowly wide of the post.
A few minutes later O’Hagan’s header following a corner was pushed out towards Fice but his overhead kick went just over the bar from 6 yards.
Skipper Tom Smith heads home goal number threeRichard Kellow put in a good cross from out on the left and the ball was headed away by Gary Hunt, but only as far as Bryant who hit a stinging shot that went just over the bar from 18 yards.
Falmouth’s new signing from Truro City, Liam Eddy, came on at the start of the second half in place of Ben Stidwell and he was soon in action as he hit a through ball to O’Hagan but Garnsworthy was off his line quickly to grab the ball of the striker’s foot.
Town regained the lead after 48 minutes when Fice got on the end of a free kick when he nipped between two defenders to slam the ball home from 8 yards.
Shortly after this Jimmy Alexander came on to replace Bryant in midfield and Eddy moved out to the left wing.
Man of the Match, Matt Drummond capped a fine display with goal number fourAfter 59 minutes O’Hagan hit a looping shot goalwards and Garnsworthy did well to tip it over the bar. The resultant corner saw Town captain Tom Smith rise high at the far post to head the ball into the back of the net for his first goal for the club.
Town went 4-1 up after 63 minutes, Drummond received the ball out wide on the right and cut in towards goal, and leaving defenders in his wake he hammered the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle for a well deserved goal.
Five minutes later Cullompton pulled a goal back when veteran substitute Roger Bonaparte rose above the Town defence to force the ball home from a corner.
Nick Pugliese came on to replace Tom Barwell and Cullompton introduced their remaining two substitutes as they tried to get back into the game.
Eddy and O’Hagan combined well to set up Pugliese for a shot at goal but he hit it over the bar from close in.
And a few minutes later the lively Eddy put over a cross which saw O’Hagan’s header blocked by Garnsworthy.
Cullompton scored their third goal a minute from time when Bonaparte again outjumped the Town defence to head home another corner.
There was just enough time left for Drummond to hit a low shot just wide of the far post as the Cullompton defence looked on.
Falmouth travel to Saltash United on Saturday and the following Thursday (22nd), entertain holders Bodmin Town in the Throgmorton Cup. Kick offs are 3pm and 7.30pm.
