Second Team beat Holmans to retain Supplementary Cup
Falmouth Town 4 (2) v 2 (2) Holmans
In what should have been a foregone conclusion, Holmans stunned the cup holders by racing into a two goal lead.
Falmouth made the initial running with Josh Sims dashing down the left wing and trying a shot from a very difficult angle when squaring the ball into the penalty area may have proved a better option. Shortly after, a corner kick from the left taken by Steve Winnan was hit with too much curl and went harmlessly out of play. Wendron then shook Falmouth by making a quick break and when the ball found Rob Hoskin, he made no mistake in putting Holmans into the lead. Town had not even had time to catch their breath when Hoskin pounced again to make it 2 nil. Falmouth were starting to lose their nerve a bit and passes were going astray allowing Holmans to keep the pressure up. A third goal at this time would have made a comeback almost impossible. However, with still only fifteen minutes of the game gone, the ball was swung out to Sims, who centred the ball in for Luke Murray to score and put Town back in the game. This spurred Falmouth to pile the pressure on their opponents and several times the framework of the goal came to the rescue of Holmans. Then with 25 minutes gone, the ball was knocked in to Winnan in the centre of the park, nodding it down he caught the rising ball just right and with the Holmans keeper off his line it flew into the net off the underside of the crossbar from fully thirty yards. With no further score, the game was delicately balanced at two all at the half-time break.
The second half never rose to the same level of excitement that the first half had given the crowd, but with just over a quarter of an hour left, Murray pounced again to give Town a 3 – 2 advantage. Back came Holmans looking to pull the scores level and they put Falmouth under quite a lot of pressure, but in a way this was there undoing as they left their defence exposed and with the clock running down time Murray completed his hat-trick to put the game beyond doubt and bring the cup back to Bickland Park.
