  • What is SACRE?

The initials stand for Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education

Since 1944, every Local Education Authority (LEA) has been required by law to have a SACRE.

  • What do we do?
Our main legal function is to advise Bournemouth LEA on both Religious Education and Collective Worship

  • To this end we:
•    ensure the LEA regularly reviews its Agreed Syllabus for R.E.
•    consider applications (‘determinations’) from schools to hold
Collective Worship that is not of a broadly Christian character
•    to advise on matters relating to training for teachers in RE and
      Collective Worship
•    monitor inspection reports on RE; Collective Worship; Spiritual,
     Moral, Social and Cultural Development
•    consider complaints about the provision and delivery of RE and
     Collective Worship
•    publish an Annual Report of our work
•    publicise our aims and services

  • Who are we?
•    Local faith communities (including Christians other than the
     Church of England)
•    The Church of England
•    Teachers
•    The Local Education Authority

We meet three times a year at Dorset House.  Members of the public are welcome to observe our meetings and should advise the secretary of SACRE of their intent.
