Special thanks to the Leicester Mercury and Steve Pumfrey for allowing us to reproduce the article on this website

A 2001 " Spaced Oddity" - that's Dave Pegg, Fairport Convention member, festival promoter and record company boss, writes our new folk correspondent Steve Pumfrey.

Here stands a veritable cottage industry - in the shape of a stalwart the folk/roots scene for more than 30 years.

" Peggy" combines his membership of the Fairports (since 1969) by promoting, with wife, Christine, the annual Cropredy Festival in Oxfordshire and running Woodworm Records, an outlet for homespun talent. And as the Fairports prepare for a tour, which includes a date at the De Montfort Hall on Sunday, February 4, " Peggy" remains as upbeat as ever.

He told The Week: " We're doing 25 consecutive nights, pretty tiring stuff at our age but there are only seven hotel stays because we're so well placed geographically where we live in Oxfordshire. It means we get home most nights.

" We had not played Leicester for a long time until last year and I remember we enjoyed a very nice evening at the De Montfort Hall. The acoustics are really good following the refurbishment. Of course, the Fairports have played the De Mont many times and we always tried to find a curry house after the gig. I remember going to a particularly good one - I think it was called the Kohinoor and it was near the station - and we stumbled into and Indian wedding, but they let us stay."

The Fairports line-up for the tour, which also includes a date at the Birmingham Symphony Hall on Saturday, February 10, is Pegg, Simon Nicol, Ric Sanders, Chris Leslie and Gerry Conway. The band will plan a new studio album this year that is pencilled in for January 2002 release. Currently available is " The Wood And The Wire" , recorded at Pegg's Woodworm Studios and released last year.

Supporting the band at the De Montfort Hall will be Steve Tilston, a Liverpool-born musician who includes a tour with the Ballet Rambert on the CV.
