NEW RACE
As promised earlier this
season a new event has been planned to offer an opportunity for
younger runners to have a go at fell running. In this event no
senior runner can enter unless they are teamed up with an Under 16
runner. ( No junior can run without a Senior either). The combined
ages of the runners will be taken into account for the prizes.
The course will be around
the skyline of the Inwood. Therefore a new course has been designed
with more Downhill than uphill! Could this catch on I wonder?

IN AID OF THE LINGEN DAVIES TRUST -
Phil Harris
Come along and enjoy a Sunday Morning
Run on May 11th in and around
Church Stretton, this 4 1/2 mile run and Family Walk (if you
don't want to run, bring your family for the walk) starts at 11
o'clock
in Rectory Field, this is by the Scout Hut behind the Church, a lot
of
you will recognise this as the field where Church Stretton Scouts
hold
the Annual Bonfire.
There are no other major events that
weekend
so come along and support us, we really want to raise a substantial
amount for the Lingen Davies Trust, which is the Cancer Unit Support
Charity in Shrewsbury, which unfortunately we are getting to know
far
to well.
Last years we had 12 RUNNERS! COME
ALONG do a race where there are no prizes,
only a cup for the first Man and First Lady. ALL the proceeds go
to the Lingen Davies Trust, which is going to build a new cancer
unit
in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. They planned to take 5 years to
raise 3.5 million pounds. In 2 1/2 years they have raised 2.5
million. You never know what's around the corner, but when the
unexpected happens you really feel you have to try and do whatever
you
can to help.
12 runners - oh dear, last year Mercia had more people digging
ditches for the National Trust than that, surely we can do better
this year, bring your Mom and Dad they can enjoy the walk with their
Grandchildren.
Any further details - ring me on 01694 771674 or 07775688484 or
watch the Mercia website.
See you there Phil Harris

Sheinton
Steeplechase 2008
With the recent
wet weather and cooler temperatures, I confidently assured the band
of willing neighbours who help out in this event that ‘I expect
about 50 to turn up…………….’
It was
therefore with both surprise and delight that we counted102 starters
on the night (although we appeared to lose one somewhere, hopefully
not still wandering about in the wilds of Homer or Cressage).
Not wishing to
put too many people off, I described the course conditions as
‘somewhat different’ to previous years having had 6 consecutive
events in the blazing sunshine. Fortunately the mudbath appealed to
most and although the course was far too wet and slippery for any
new records to be set, I was interested to hear that a number of new
personal PB’s were recorded by satisfied runners.
With a good
number of new faces appearing there was some shuffling of the top 20
order, led by Chris Davies of Telford AC and the only sub 20 minute
man this time around. Pete Ball and Robin Sedman-Smith had a grand
battle for 2nd place, with Robin only being pipped right
on the line, the Shrewsbury man’s ascendancy being put down to him
hurdling the stiles as opposed to climbing over them like the rest
of us.
Anna Bartlett
again claimed the ladies prize with Lisa Garside as the runner up.
The familiar names of Kev Francis, Dawsy (sorry Simon, the fruit
basket went early this year), and John Coombes took the men’s vet
prizes and Jean Turner, Grace Hough, Sheila Richards and Pauline
Richards for the ladies.
Special
mention to Joe Donnelly who, still considerably within the ‘junior’
definition, took that prize in an impressive 31st place
overall. I’d put aside some evil looking ‘Hot Chilli chocolate’ as a
suitable reward, but after a longing glance at the booze bottles he
intelligently walked off with the pralines.
Thanks again
to everyone who ran and everyone who helped. Our income to church
restoration funds was just over £500, fantastic!
You’ll be
amazed to hear that the organizer reaches 50 next year and as such
is planning a few extra bits and bobs around the event to mark the
occasion. See you all next year for the fun.

Sheinton Steeplechase
2007-05-05
A training route that is
used all the year round is experienced in all conditions; from the
biting northerly wind over icy sodden bogs at one end of the scale,
to scorching summer heat and parched solid ground at the other.
Here at Sheinton we’ve been unable to offer such variety for our
event. In its short history, flag cracking sunshine has been the
only weather type on offer and runners were treated to more of the
same in 2007.
If ever a race disproved the
myth that tough sports are best for young bucks, this was the one.
The first two home, Dave Mansbridge and Rick Hailey a V40 and V50
respectively (both newcomers to the event) were the only two
competitors to arrive back in under 20 minutes. They were hotly
pursued however by the quartet of Peter Ball, Kev Francis, Anton
Nicholls and Ed Davies, all finishing in under 21 minutes.
Anna Bartlett took the
ladies prize with Mel Price of Mercia not too far behind. It was
great to see an increased ladies field this year, so be warned for
2008 Anna!
The only potential hiccup
came during prize giving where Dawsy’s hopes of claiming the mega
fruit basket for a second consecutive year wobbled a bit when first
lady Anna appeared to give it an unseemly level of attention on the
prize table - before espying the nearby gin bottle. Panic over.
One day, when it just pours
and pours, Sheinton’s special ‘Slithery Hill’ will come into its own
for the race, although I daresay that most would settle for yet
another boring sun fest again next year.
Thanks to villagers for
contributing all of the fantastic prizes which meant that we raised
just short of £300 for the night. Thanks also to the residents
providing marshalling, registration etc. Special thanks to those who
gave an extra donation. Most of all, thanks to all you lot for
coming.
Grahame Hughes
P.S. Whilst spectators lazed
and sunned themselves around the finish area my youngest daughter
Flora took off with a camera and managed to capture a large
proportion of the field getting their leg over on the course. Once
Dawsy has mended my wheezing computer, these pictures will be
available in his ‘Gallery’, where you will be able to inspect the
wide variety of ways that people were caught in the act. There
could be a small delay on this provision however.

The Classic Shropshire Weekend started off in grand style with
beautiful weather for the Titterstone Clee Fell Race, early arrivals
were treated to a fantastic vista as they climbed out of Ludlow up
to Clee Hill with the lowlands over Worcestershire & Herefordshire
swathed in low cloud and just the higher ground poking out like
ships at sea. The crystal clear visibility remained for the race
with perfect conditions making for fast running, however that didn't
stop half the field taking the wrong route and allowing the more
stately plodders like myself to find faster running and maybe finish
higher up the order than we should, however Pete Vale came home in
convincing style in preparation for his attempt at two wins in one
weekend
The good conditions lasted throughout whole weekend and made for
good racing on the Sunday too, and non better than between the
leading two with Pete Vale and Simon Bailey battling all the way to
the line, just half a second between them at the finish, Tim Werrett
was third, with Andy Davies making sure of a Team Win for Mercia.
The Ladies Race was won by Anna Bartlett, Shrewsbury AC in
terrific form over Tracey Jayne Greenway of Ashbourne and Gill Evans
from Shepshed.
Finally, many thanks to all those who help to make this weekend
happen.

"Its a Cracker"
Tim Davies of Mercia and Michael James of Shrewsbury produced a
real cracker of a race for the 19th Cardington Cracker Fell Race,
organised by Telford Athletic Club. The tough 9 mile race from
Cardington near Church Stretton attracted a record equalling 253
finishers as Welshpool based GB International Tim Davies, who was
8th in this Summer's European Championships, also set a new course
record.
Sunny but very windy conditions greeted the large field, but Davies
and James went straight to the front and quickly established a
healthy lead. They were together as they reached the top of the
first climb the Lawley, where gale force winds almost blew runners
off their feet. These two had had a great battle in the Breidden
Hills Race in October and this was to be an even closer affair. Mike
James, from Ditherington, who gained his first English international
vest in the World Championships held in Turkey in September, took a
slight lead on Caer Caradoc, thew second climb in the race. Davies'
never say die attitude saw him claw back the lead as the runners
approached the third climb onto the Hope Bowdler ridge. As the two
came onto the Wilderness an area before the descent into Cardington,
Davies established a lead. Once he felt he was getting away, he
piled on the pressure to cross the finish line in a new record time
of 1 hour 9 minutes and 43 seconds, the first man to ever break 70
minutes and to break the old record set by Dave Neill in 1998 of
1.10.11, by a clear 28 seconds. It is the 5th time that the Welshman
has won the race, previous wins were in 1995,2001,2003 and 2005.
James although having to settle for second, ran the second
fastest ever time, in his race debut,of 1.10.01 and should feel
delighted at the part he played in such a great race. The times were
amazing in the windiest conditions that runners have experienced in
the 19 year history of the event.
Tom Owens, a recent addition to the Mercia club, was 3rd having a
superb run the day after racing in the Birmingham Cross Country
League, he crossed the finishing line in 1.13.23. His team maate
Pete Vale was 4th to consolidate another excellent performance for
the events Mr Consistency as he has finished in the top 7 for the
last 5 years, but his time of 1.14.32 was 30 seconds faster than his
previous best. Richard Roberts from Eryri, 6th in the North Wales
Cross Country League the week before was 5th in 1.18.17. Church
Stretton based, Ian Hughes running for Shrewsbury AC was 7th in
1.20.42.
The 2005 World Masters Fell Running Champion, won the womens race
in 1.26.22, finishing 31st in the race overall, just under a minute
outside Amanda Wright's course record set last year. Bristol and
West's Helen Fines was second in 1.29.20 with Shrewsbury's Welsh
International Anna Bartlett 3rd in 1.30.23, her fastest ever time on
the course by 26 seconds.Tattenhall's Sarah Hammond was
4th,1.38.21.Mercia's, Shrewsbury based teacher Rachel Bollom, ran
well for 5th 1.40, with Ludlow Runners' Penny Priest was 6th home in
1.40.25, with Shropshire Shufflers Val Swingler 7th in 1.42.18 and
Shrewsbury AC's international triathlete Grace Chillingworth was 8th
in 1.43.01.
Other Local finishers were
Men
10th Andy Yapp, Mercia 2nd Veteran 40 1.21.39
18th Mark Bollom,Mercia 1.23.21
25th Kevin Francis, Shrewsbury AC 1.25.02
26th Colin Lancaster, Telford AC, 2nd Veteran 45, 1.25.40

Wrekin Wrecker results up thanks Glen and the Newport crew for
putting a great race. The chip butties and long prize list will make
this a popular event. It must be noted the quality of the field was
very high with Mike James claiming another record.
4/11/06
Please note that the Wrecker registration takes place at
Wellington Cricket Club with a jog to the start!

Wow what an action packed weekend. It all started with the FRA
relays in Castle Carr near Halifax on Saturday. Tim Davies bringing
Mercia home in first place on leg one. The lead continued until the
navigation leg. Rowland Stafford and Pete Vale did the team proud
navigating well on tricky ground and bringing the team back in
fourth slot still in contention. A storming anchor leg by Simon
Bailey brought them home in a creditable second place to local
favourites Bingley Harriers. The Mercia Vets came home in 5th with
Dark Peak taking the honours. Telford AC completed with a mixed team
and managed 60th position and had a thoroughly great day. A well
organised event at a great venue!
The fun continued today with Mike James getting the better of Tim
Davies on the Breidden Hills. Tim's efforts on Saturday taking the
toll on the Welsh international although he still ran a remarkable
race. Congratulations to the organisation which was as smooth as
ever with homemade soup and samosas to boot. Results for the race
are now posted. The first race in the winter series.

Sorry about the delay with the latest fell results due to a wet
and windy tandem tour of Ireland (very enjoyable though!!). We now
have the Ragleth and Summer series latest for your studies.
18/07/06
Sorry this has taken so long but I was missed off the mailing!
Find the results from the
Stiperstones Inn, a large turn out enjoyed a fine weather,
hopefully everyone liked the revised route, I'd decided to
change the course having experienced congestion during the early
stages of the two previous fell races in the series and thought
reversing the route would alleviate this on the Stiperstones
route and although this meant a steep decent into Mytton Dingle,
once down I particularly enjoyed running threw all the spectator
at the bottom of the valley, hope you enjoyed it to, please feel
free to make any comments you feel fit.
Series results may have to wait a
couple of weeks till I come back from my summer hol's, look
forward to seeing you all at the next and last race in this
years summer series at The Ragleth on Wed 30th Aug .
DON'T FORGET ITS A 7:00pm START

Sheinton Steeplechase 2006
Race Report
A record 70 souls stoically
braved the glorious sunshine and zephyr like breezes to attend our
2006 race. This years winner Robin Sedman Smith knocked 6 seconds
off his 2004 time (when he was 2nd) to finish in 19.43 and
deservedly walked off with a bottle of Champers. The chasing pack
was not far behind however with the first nine finishers all coming
home in under 21 minutes, a strong indication of the overall field
quality.
The larger field meant a
number of runners were making their debut at this event including
Peter Stuart Ball in 2nd and Roland Stafford in 3rd.
Louise Taylor had a great run to finish 14th overall and
take the ladies prize whilst Simon Daws swiped the MV50 award and
made off with an enormous basket of fruit (presumably for your jam
making Simon?). Junior Sam Hugh added to his impressive Wrekin
Streak finish with 4th overall at Sheinton.
Although the Steeplechase
traditionally hosts a groaning prize table (all donated by Sheinton
residents so that 100% of entry monies go towards restoring the
fabric of the church), the increased numbers did mean that some
regular receivers of booty left empty handed this year. However,
due to a two boo boos of mine (one corrected during prize giving), I
omitted to make one award. So if there is a disgruntled female
(hint!) runner out there who thinks they should have received a
share of the spoils – you’re right! Please get in touch so that I
can quickly resolve this.
Thanks to everyone who came
and everyone who helped, villagers and runners alike. I hope you all
enjoyed it. Quote of the night came from one runner to another as
they walked back to their cars post event: “I can’t understand why
I’ve never done that event before, it was superb!” So, if you’re
still in that ‘virgin’ category, remember 2007 is not too late to
make your debut (we might even have gone computerised on the results
by then too).
27/04/06
Fantastic turn out for the Wrekin Streak thanks to all the
marshalls and runners for making this the best one yet. You can now

05/04/06

with not having the school hall to use was a real test especially
for Verone with the catering & Steve J on registration.
For those in the 'Cc…' section then
maybe next year we can persuade you to assist in the 30th Wrekin
race in some way or another???
Cheers for now & no doubt see you
soon.

04/03/04
Winter Series results are available up to but not including the
Wrekin.
Only a very poor turnout marred another great Wrekin Fell Race.
It was a shame that a short race with such a lot of tradition
attracted less runners than you would expect for a summer series
evening run! Despite this, it was a well organised and contested
race. Telford's Andy Smith showing great form with third overall and
Colin Lancaster finishing in his highest position if not in his
fastest time. Robin Sedman-Smith claimed the trophy for the host
club one of the few times the winner has not broken the magical
40mins. The long standing record looks like it will take some
beating and we might be waiting for the next generation of fell
runners to do so.
Don't miss the first Summer Series Race the Wrekin Streak. 28th
of April at 7-30 from the forest Glen. Lets get over 100 runners out
and give the road boys something to think about.
07/03/04
Great race today thanks to all those who enabled us to come along
and run. I thought the course had something for everyone even a
little flat. Thanks to Keith for the results which are now available
for you to peruse. Keep those emails and photos coming. There will
be a gallery update soon.
15/02/04
Innov-8 v Walsh first reports now coming in hit the news on the
navigation bar above. Come on get emailing!!!!!
11/02/04
What a great weekend of Fell Running! It was good to see the both
races
still attracting strong fields. Special thanks to the Springfield
mob who
contributed greatly to both days. Training for the Long Mynd Valleys
must
be more of a challenge when you come from Chelmsford. Perhaps they
have some hills that we don't know about? This years new organisers
Phil and Gill Harris have taken over the popular event. This proved
no problem to such a seasoned pair of fell runners as they already
organise the Long Mynd Hike and other local races. Congratulations
to them for the successful weekend not forgetting Keith and
Pauline's results and registration service second to non! The
gallery has a few images of the race thanks Andy all gratefully
received.
We should also congratulate Andy Yapp for an outstanding show of
endurance over the two days
RACES FOR 2004
Well if you are like me you will be busy flicking through that new
pink calendar looking ahead for some challenges and races that take
your fancy. I must admit the amount of races certainly makes 2004 a
record breaking year. After the demise of road racing fell running
looks in good shape and its popularity is holding. Admitted some of
the big races now attract much smaller fields but the choice of
races is mind boggling. You could certainly race every weekend if
you felt the need.
So what highlights are there in the calendar apart from those
local races? Some of you might fancy a visit to Yorkshire for the
Three Peaks at the end of April. Its 24 miles and 4500' of
ascent this is a championship year and its the 50th event, they have
a 600 limit so get your entries in. There is some good running and
the record is 2hrs 46mins for men and 3hrs 16mins for women.
Needing a challenge?
Then look no further than the Lakeland classic 37mile Old County
Tops. Its a pairs event just to make things a little more exciting!
In fact finding a suitable partner is the most difficult part. You
could end up in a rather messy divorce. You get to know people very
well on this event!
We Need You
Please give us some feedback about races or anything that might
interest other runners. I would love some race reviews or tell us
your worst nightmare. This site has been all about results but if
you get those emails going we could make the whole thing a lot more
interesting.
