It is possible that William was first married to an Elizabeth. The IGI shows a christening of Robert Ferguson on 11 June 1819 son of William and Elisabeth (sic) Ferguson. Free BMD has a record of the death of an Elizabeth Ferguson Cir Mar 1839 in Chorley Vol 21 Page 261. There are numerous possible marriages between William Fergusons and Mary Anns!

Notes: Marriage

At the 1851 census were a number of children described as son/daugh with the surname Smith presumably from a first marriage of Elizabeth. All are in the same business as William Ferguson. Also there was a daughter Esther Walker aged 31 a servant, married, and her daughter Sarah.
