The New Forest Pony has evolved over hundreds of years and is commonly thought of as one of Britain’s nine ‘wild’ ponies. It is not however wild, but a Ranched Pony which is rounded-up and branded with the marks of Commoners. A hardy, sure-footed animal with a good temperament which make ideal riding ponies for children and adults alike. Sizes range from 12 to 14.2hh.

The Forest

The New Forest is anything but!
It was created in 1079 by William I as a royal hunting ground. Although still Crown Land, it is managed by the Forestry Commission and covers approximately 93,000 acres (145 sq miles) of Southern England.

The Forest is still run under Ancient Laws and Rights. Commoners’ Rights which used to be exercised throughout the country are still applicable today. One of these rights is to allow Commoners (Forest Residents) to turn out stock for grazing. As well as Cattle, it is the New Forest Pony which is most often seen.
