United suffered yet another defeat this time 3-0 at high flying Marine.
Manager Neil Allison had told his side to give themselves a chance
of getting something from this game.
It didn’t happen and they went down to their second away defeat
in a row against a good side. It also wasn’t the best of days
for United goalkeeper Antoni Pecora who came up with some crucial
errors.
“I told the lads prior to the game they needed to give themselves
a chance of winning this game as they were good enough,” said
Allison.
“I thought we started better than them but conceded an early
goal against which we can’t afford to do. A couple of goalkeeping
errors cost us today but we just didn’t make things happen.
“We lacked the killer instinct up front and didn’t get
any kind of conviction in sight of goal. We didn’t make it happen
out there today and our second half performance was just not good
enough.
“I’m sorry I just can’t accept this kind of performance
and I have told the lads this. We have given three goals away again
and you can’t expect to recover from doing this.
“This is the frustrating part as we cannot allow ourselves to
give team this kind of start. We get ourselves into a position like
this and expect to be able to get out of it and we can’t.”
Marine made a strong start to the game and the impressive Paul Woolcott
saw his 5th minute shot flash across the goal. The ball fell to Peter
Cumiskey whose shot was well held by Pecora at his near post.
The home side took the lead in the 10th minute when Woolcott’s
mazy dribble ended up with the ball at the feet of Nicky Young. His
shot took a slight bobble and bounced past the embarrassed keeper
and into the net.
The second half saw Ferriby start with a flurry of corners but none
of which troubled Marine. Then on 54 minutes Marine doubled their
lead which started from a throw in.
Woolcott brilliantly turned his marker and crossed to the far post
where Latham. He had the simple task to stretch and knock the ball
in and now it was all Marine.
Pecora’s nightmare day continued on 73 minutes when the ball
was played back to the keeper. Under little pressure he mis-controlled
and then tried to dribble past Cumiskey.
The striker took the ball off the keeper leaving him flat on his back-side
before rolling the ball into an empty net. It is now about seeing
how Ferriby respond at Church Road on Tuesday night against Ashton
United.
