q&a
Q. How did you become an illustrator?

A. I sent some samples round the publishing
houses asking for feedback. People were really
kind and sent me encouraging replies. Among
the letters were actual commissions and
these started the ball rolling.

Q. What are the best and worst things
about your job?

A. I really like being my own boss, deciding
what I'm going to do each day and when. It's
also nice to have the flexibility to fit in some
voluntary work. The downside is that it can
be quite lonely; I miss all the office gossip!
Q. Do you have any tips for would-be illustrators?

A. Go for it! Keep your drawings loose in the early stages - don't be afraid to scribble and end up with a messy rough. And why not send some samples to a publisher? It's a great way to build up your confidence and might even result in a commission.
