About
Karate
Karate is system of self defence and physical exercise
originally developed on the island of Okinawa. The word is formed from the Japanese
words Kara (empty) and te (hand) meaning that it's practitioners use their
hands and feet as striking weapons.
Shotokan?
Shotokan is a style of karate developed by an
Okinawan teacher Gichin Funakoshi
who introduced it to Japan in 1922. Shotokan has become the most widely
practised style of karate in the world.
The
benefits of karate training
Karate can be practised by men women and children of all ages. Karate training
will improve health, self confidence and overall well-being. Parents and
teachers regularly report on the improvement in school work and behaviour of
children who train regularly.
Whats Involved
Training is structured into three sections Kihon (basic techniques),
Kata (formal exercises) and Kumite (sparring). Each section has different levels
of complexity to suit the different grades of students.
Every 3 months a grading is held, these are not compulsory but are the way you
proceed to a different coloured belt.
