Recent Events

The Huntingdon & District Branch, has around 500 members but, like all similar organisations, the number of those active is somewhat less. Nevertheless we are one of the most successful branches in the area with a membership that has increased steadily in recent years. Also, in the last few years we have worked particularly hard to provide an interesting and varied social programme to complement the essential welfare work undertaken by the Branch.

We meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month in the Sergeants' Mess at RAF Wyton with the meeting commencing at 7.30 p.m. For those no longer serving, the guardroom staff will grant entry to the station on production of a RAFA membership card and for those who attend regularly we are able to obtain social and car passes giving easy access to both RAF Brampton and RAF Wyton. Our regular meetings take the form of a brief given by the Branch Committee on what is going on followed by an interval to charge our glasses before a short talk on a subject of local interest. During the year we arrange a number of "Supper & Presentation Evenings" where, with our partners, we enjoy a buffet supper before settling down to listen to a guest speaker. Each year we arrange a Branch Dinner in Huntingdon (Apr02), a "Black Tie" Dinner Dance at RAF Wyton (19Oct01) and a Band Concert in St Ives (15Sep01). We also try to arrange visits to places of interest. Our partners are welcome to attend all meetings and those who have not served in the RAF can, should they so wish, join RAFA and/or the Branch as Associate Members. Naturally, fund raising forms an essential part of our welfare work with our efforts concentrated around Wings Week each September. Last year we managed to collect nearly £9500 which is the greatest amount collected by the Branch in a single year. At various times during 2001 we will be collecting at the Abbots Ripton Tesco Superstore, Waitrose in St Ives, Brampton Racecourse, Huntingdon Railway Station and, on Battle of Britain Saturday, on the streets in Huntingdon, Ramsey and St Ives. In addition we conduct house-to-house collections throughout the district. As a branch we aim to keep in touch with members through the issue of our quarterly Branch Newsletter which, together with our 6-monthly Social Programme, is distributed to members free of charge.
