Rhirid FLAIDD was a Welsh nobleman living at Rhiwaedog in Penlyn, Gwynedd, Wales in c1100, who was according to the History of Powys, granted this Coat of Arms ( 12th Century poem about him). Anciently he is descended from Cynedda Wledig, King of Cumberland c530.His descendants can be traced in the 16th century, to John Lloyd of Morton Shropshire. John's son Richard (c1540-1603) can be traced to Drogheda and Dublin, Ireland where the surname was corrupted by local dialect to Flood ( Origins of the Surname), while another son, Thomas (c1540-1607), was made Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I during her wars with the Netherlands in Europe, and was knighted for his services and loyalty. His surname was corrupted to Fludd and that of his later descendants to Flood.Sir Thomas Fludd retired to Millgate House, Bearsted, Kent. His son Robert ( Biography), became a celebrated philosopher in the 17th century while the descendants of his grandson John (Biography) can be traced today to Charlottesville, Virginia, AmericaThe heirs of Sir Thomas remained at Bearsted, Kent throughout the 17th century, but the family later fell on hard times and lost much of their prominence and wealth. However, there are families with the surname Flood still living in Kent to this day, and they may well be his descendants. |
