Foxlease Camp, August 2003

The Ardeche Camp was our unit's main camp in 2003 but the East Wantage Guides invited us to their camp in Hampshire. Only myself and my sister went to this camp out of 2nd Wantage Guides, knowing only one person from the other unit. The moment we arrived we were made welcome and friendships were made almost imediately.

It was a "sleeping under canvas" type of camp, so we spent the first day erecting the tents, unfolding our bedding rolls, making gadgets out of wood and string (such as the famous welly rack) and just settling in.

Throughout the week we did a range of activities such as archery, swimming, Initiative exercises and low ropes. These were all great fun and around the Foxlease site there was a fitness course that we spent one memorable afternoon completing!

At the end of the week we went to Paulton Park a local themepark and had a great time going round the rides again and again. My favourite had to be the dragon roller-coaster, which although was petite, provided many laughs. We also spent ages trying to find our way out of the huge maze!!!

On the last evening it poured with rain and luckily we had already taken down the tents. We had a Chinese take away as a treat which was delicious and by the end of the meal everyone had mastered the art of "chopstickising".We slept on the floor of the shelter with a small goody bag of sweets each for our "midnight" feast In the shelter's roof a small bird lived and a fellow Guide was petrified of birds. You may guess what happened , it was a very eventful night.
