Keswick Camp, August 2004

The journey to the Lake District took about six hours and after travelling that amount of time in an old, rickety, noisy bus with no air conditioning, you can imagine just how relieved we were when we got off at the campsite and given a rowdy welcome from the staff. The acorn layout was the same as all previous acorn adventure camps, with all our tents in one big circle. On our guided tour we were surprised to learn we needed 20p for a 3 minute shower. A 3 minute shower!!!  This crisis was soon resolved when we realised we would be given the 20ps and then we stored them up for one or two (if you were lucky) long showers.

The activities consisted of Kayaking, which was cold, but fantastic. Hill walk, although it was tiring there were some stunning views at the top and we even saw the Teletubies' House!

There was canoeing, Mission Impossible, Archery, in which we were given the challenge of hitting certain colour won you a spoon, a knife or a fork and then you had to eat your lunch with the cutlery you won. Most of us ended up eating with two spoons! We did abseiling on a real rock face on which you also got stunning views:

And finally the Gorge Walk, which we all agreed was the best activity. We were driven in our lovely gear to the bottom of a stream and we had to climb up it, up the waterfalls, through the pools and eventually to the washing machine at the top, where you got completely drenched under a waterfall and the pressure forces you down it....great fun!

In the evenings there would always be some sort of activity, whether it be rounders, games or a quiz (we beat the leaders) and many guide songs. At the end was the famous evening Cabaret, the theme this time being superheroes. As well as several energetic acts from the acorn staff there were the "Super Leaders" and many acts from the guides. A truly memorable night.

The journey back was luxurious, in a fabulous new coach, however we all stank of lake and our bags contained so much water and mud they weighted quite a lot extra. A lovely end to a wonderful week.
