One of the main
reasons for setting up Friends was to provide volunteer support to the
Library staff to enable them to undertake a wider range of activities and
promote the Libraries in the local community.
What might
volunteers be asked to do?
-
Visit
local schools with Library staff during their parents'
afternoons/evenings to explain to parents the benefits of their
children becoming members of the Library.
-
Help
staff during the Library's regular events for children, which are
designed to encourage them to use the Library from a young age.
This may involve reading to children, or helping them with craft activities.
-
For
volunteers with specialist knowledge, such as computer skills, assist
users of the Library to become more proficient.
If you are
interested in becoming a Friends' volunteer, come along to any of our
Committee meetings, held monthly, on the first Wednesday of the month at
6.30pm. Alternatively contact the Chairman or another committee member.
The AGM, held every April, or the Christmas Party could be a good
opportunity where you will be able to talk to Library staff and other
Friends.
Friends
welcome all offers of help
Help us with
the running of FOWHL events. In the past we have:
-
run
successful Coffee and Cakes Mornings, to raise funds and recruit new
members
-
assisted in
running
activities for children in the Library
-
assisted
Library staff with school visits.
Further
activities are planned.
We need helpers
or even leaders for one-off events like these!
If you have the
time or have ideas for similar activities that could raise money for the
Library or promote its work, please get in touch with us!
Help us support
the work of the Library Staff
The Library
itself can benefit greatly from volunteer help on a regular or occasional
basis.
Library staff
are often invited to attend school Parents' Evenings to promote the work
of the Library. We were able to provide volunteers to accompany Library
staff on several of these visits.
