| Lydney
Town ……. This at the Southern end of the forest of dean.
It was an important riverside port for the forest of Dean, as coal was exported from here to the West of England and Ireland. Prior to the building of the canal it was also engaged in ship building using the timber from the forest of Dean when sail was at its peak. Lydney was at onetime a major employment area for the southern part of the forest. With the Plywood Factory, the Tin Plate Works and the Rubber Company, Watts Boilers and Watts Garage, but these have all gone, some to other countries, some ceased trading, Tesco supermarket now stands on the site of "Watts Garage, Letherens Garage, old Post Office and the Old Feathers Hotel". Today there are still many smaller Companies in and around Lydney but these have become more diverse in their work and type of employment. Recently the Harbour has been renovated with better lock gates, pathways, picnic sites and other features added. From the Quay, and the bank separating the canal and Severn, are good views looking up the river to the Forest on the left and Cotswold Hills on the right, and looking down the river towards the two Severn bridges. There are several large rocks with holes bored thro' them highlighting various places of interest acros the river. There is also group of pillars of stone that forms the four compass points, when looking at them facing any of the compass points the letters on the stones spell out the direction you are looking. Lydney town is a thriving place
with many shops and three super markets
Lydney Park Estate........
The gardens are open in the spring time for a display of Daffodils and
Azaleas and Rhododendrons.
