Lindisfarne Cruise - May 2008

Message from Sean Cunningham, Cruising Convenor

10 yacht owners and 10 crew expressed an interest in this.
Following some discussion we suggest this takes place on the weekend of 24/25 May.
Outline plan is:

Friday 23rd Evening Port Edgar to Granton
Saturday 24th Granton to Pittenweem (or straight to Pittenweem from Port Edgar)
Sunday 25th Pittenweem to Eyemouth
Monday 26th Eyemouth to Lindisfarne and back to Eyemouth
Tuesday 27th Back to Port Edgar via Dunbar or Pittenweem

Clearly there are different exit points – you may wish to return home from Eyemouth on the Monday or even Pittenweem on the Sunday.
We haven’t checked tides for optimum departure times as yet; and if there is a large fleet we will need to talk to the harbourmaster at Pittenweem.

If you are still interested in taking part please let me know and we will try and arrange an evening get together in the near future to discuss.

MCA adds sea bed maps to Google Earth

Users of Google Earth, the online bird's eye view of the entire planet, may enjoy a new feature that allows you to view the seabed alongside the images of the land. According to a technical expert at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the data, which has to be downloaded from the MCA website, represents the majority of the Agency's re-surveying output for the last three or four years.

Step-by-step
1. Download Google Earth (it's free but it likes new computers best)
Click here to download Google Earth

2. Go to the MCA website and download the seabed image files
Click here to download MCA seabed files

3. Open Google Earth on your computer.

4. Go to: File - Open - and select the file you downloaded from Step 2 (which should end with the suffix: .kmz)

Warning: Not to be used for navigation!

2007 Bell Trophy

Another year and another challenge! The idea behind the George Bell Memorial Trophy event is to encourage more cruising boats to get out on the water. Last year we had a very interesting exercise in micro navigation. This year we are trying something different based on getting to places and noting simple observations. Most of the answers will not be found by pouring over charts at home, ‘surfing the net’ or hanging about the bar.

We are not setting a short time limit.  The competition starts now and continues until Sunday, 2nd of September. Before the end of September, completed entries may be posted or delivered by hand, to the Clubhouse marked “FAO Cruising Convener – Bell Trophy”. Entries may also be sent via my e-mail address: seanandtheresa@btinternet.com .

2007 Driftwood Trophy Race

Saturday 2nd June saw a healthy turnout of yachts for this year's Driftwood Trophy with 5 bilge keel and 4 fin keelers. A force 4/5 was forecast raising expectations of similar conditions to that of the 2006 race. The Officer of the Day set a challenging course based on current wind conditions, Hen and Chickens for bilge and Kincardine bridge for fins.

However minutes after the start of the race the fresh force 4 dropped to a force 3 leaving some boats in holes and others swept on by the current. After reaching the Hen and Chickens the wind deserted the fleet and bilge keelers had to motor back to harbour. Fin keelers made better progress and after a resourceful OOD jumped into the rescue boat, they managed to finish the fins at Tancred. After handicap, Joe Swankie with his Dehler 21 finished first out of the 4 fin keelers followed closely by Jim Simpson's Katie Mor. For full race results & photos see racing page.

*** Stop press...Driftwood Trophy to be re-run for bilge keelers on Saturday 11 August @ 12.30 BST ***
