General Description
Important: Use the drop-down menu above to view STILL photography if available - VIDEO will be shown on each "Site" page if available

A very picturesque area with an unclassified road leading down the north side of this lake. It is a very popular area with walkers / ramblers (photos a & b). Ennerdale has partial tree cover from conifer trees running up the hillside on the unclassified road side of the lake.

For those with other Interests
Ennerdale Bridge village (photo c) is a handy stopping place for toilets (in Hotel) and picking up food and drinks. You are also not too far from the Li'al Ratty miniture gauge steam railway.

How to get here
Head for either Cockermouth or Egremont. Look for the B5086 (at Cockermouth it's the roundabout situated on the outskirts of Cockermouth). Follow this road and watch for signs to Kirkland, follow this, and then Ennerdale bridge. (Both these signs are difficult to spot and I'll forgive you for not realising you have gone over Ennerdale Bridge!!) but you should spot the hotel with good food and ale just over the bridge with the rusted up signpost pointing to "the lake" - now you are getting warm! and to people new to this area I hope you have a clear picture that this may be difficult to find especially for divers like us who tend to drive "a little on the fast side". Buds - kill the speed or you'll do a fly-by and good-bye.

Detailed Information for Divers
Main Attraction
Cool, pale blue water with several main features. At site 5: The river mouth is interesting (river Liza) with heaps of boulders forming ridges. The water purity buoy and the submerged trees that are home to fish. Silt is inevitably, but thanks to its density (firm to hard), clear waters are guaranteed anywhere in this lake.
Site 1: The Anglers Hotel area has a hard lakebed and very fine gravel like material and unless you travel well out into the lake you will never hit silt and even if you do, it is still quite hard silt. Windsurfers may find the breeze a little weak here due to the protection offered by the mountains. Anglers do not appear to frequent this lake too often probably because I have never seen anything more than a small perch, and no fishing tackle to collect, although my fellow buddies claim there are good fish here. Site 3 & 4 are listed because these have easy access but follow video instructions!. Please note that so far, no-one has dived site 3 & 4 to the best of my knowledge.

Viewing Freshwater Life
Trout, perch, stickleback and minnow can be chanced upon during the day but only if you are lucky, with your best chance at dive site 5.

UU respectfully point out that no diving is available at Ennerdale from Aug 2007 onward. This lake had been dived some years back prior to knowledge received regarding UU PLC 2007 change in policy.
Things do change- hopefully back to pre 2007, so it is worth checking with them.
All those diving UU Reservoirs must be Advanced Divers or above and you will have to prove it - on site. So don't forget your Book's with Certs!

Divers wishing to contact United Utilities Plc for possible diving permission please find full contact details on the link beside the MAP on this page.
Latest current information is held in the clickable "United Utilities Permission Required" document found beside our Ennerdale map above.
