Yes, it will be ten years ago this year that the FUCHSIA EXTRAVAGANZA was staged at the Spa Complex in Scarborough in celebration of the B.F.S. Golden Anniversary, with the Scarborough & District Fuchsia Society under the expert guidance of our then President, Robert Poyner, playing a major part in organising and staging of the event. Many still remember the magnificent sight when entering the hall, completely filled with fuchsias galore. Superb displays from the participating Societies Everyone seeing it for the first time was most impressed indeed and subsequently it has lived up to expectation by becoming such an impressive winner at Shows all around the country, figuring prominently in the B.F.S. Top Ten show plants ever since its general release by Arcadia Nurseries of Middlesbrough in 1988. This upright single, hybridised by Peter Webb from Humberside, is distinguised by its erect held blooms which it produces in great abundance, at time just about covering the foliage. Just lately though, in the last couple of years it has actually been overtaken in the popularity stakes by its sport Rose Fantasia (M Wilkinson 1993) which is identical apart from the colour, the sepals are bright rose and the corolla pale rose with red veins - a striking, shining flower. Pink Fantasia was donated by Peter Webb to the Fuchsia Extravaganza where a competion was held to choose its name On a personal note I remember the Extravaganza well. Being prompted in entering a big show for the very first time, still being such a naive newcomer, I felt somewhat out of my depth, but was also intrigued and determined to have a whole-hearted go another time. And, as a sort of just reward, I remember being presented by the person who encouraged me more than anyone else on the show path, Robert Poyner, with my very first Nellie Nuttall - and just look where that led………..
