As I completed the early stages of the Top Ten and to about three quarters of the way through - I was convinced that Wigan Peer would come out on top - it was about 40 points ahead of the rest, but then slowly but surely it was over taken by both Shelford and Border Raider. It was, however, close Shelford scored 162, Border Raider 150 and Wigan Peer 147. Perhaps Shelford is coming to the end of it's reign, but what we do have is a very pale top three! When Border Raider first came out - it was really only having success in the north of the country, but that situation does seem to have changed as it now features in results from all over the country, it evidently took us a little while to get the measure of it! The rest of the top ten and even the next five were full of old favourites that have featured well in the top show fuchsias for a number of years, I was pleased to see London 2000 having a good year, it has my favourite colour combination - creamy white tube and sepals with rich violet petals. The numbers of different cultivars shown was up on last year with over 320 being exhibited in the 5" to any size pot classes at the 60 plus show results that I work my way through! The numbers are slowly creeping up - perhaps we are becoming more adventurous in what we show. The 3½" pot gave the following Top Five - 1. Sophie Louise, 2. Border Raider, 3. Twinny, 4. Nellie Nuttall, 5. Wigan Peer. Sophie Louise was way ahead again but only by about 40 points rather than the 50 of 2003! Again the number of cultivars being shown in the 3½" pot classes had risen by about 20 to over 120. Looking at the top five - we do seem to be following a trend of pinks and whites, those with a bit more colour to them came in the next five - such as Kobold, Maria Landy and Alison Patricia.
