Manchester City 6-2 Barrow
January 10th 1946
FA Cup 3rd Round
Attendance 19589
Only five months after the end of World War II, Barrow travelled to Maine Road to take on Manchester City in the third round of the FA Cup. Normal league football hadn’t resumed after the wartime suspension but the FA Cup commenced with ties being played over two legs.
Barrow had made it to the third round after defeating Netherfield (now Kendal Town) 3-2 on aggregate in the first round and then Carlisle United 8-5 on aggregate in the second round.
Barrow despite playing well were simply outclassed by their First Division hosts and suffered a 6-2 defeat.
Barrow’s Irish forward Kevin Clarke proved dangerous and was rewarded by scoring both Barrow goals, while midfielders Dunnigan and Clarkson combined well and goalkeeper Phillipson made a number of fine saves.
